This report is a compilation of activity and statistics for the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education for 2005 (Volume 69). The Journal was published in electronic format at www.ajpe.org [Link type: , href: www.ajpe.org]. A print edition of the full volume was also produced and sent to all AACP member institutions and paid subscribers. Five issues were published in 2005 plus supplementary material.
During 2005 the Journal underwent transitions in location and process. The editorial office was relocated to the University of South Carolina in Columbia, requiring changes in contact information (Email: ajpe@cop.sc.edu and Tel: 803-777-3096). The Journal concluded a production contract with the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. We are now using an Internet-based manuscript tracking system (Editorial Manager), and electronic manuscript production was initiated with The Sheridan Press of Hanover, Pennsylvania.
We are continuing to make more archived issues available online. Twelve Journal volumes (58-69, from 1994 to the present) are now accessible at www.ajpe.org [Link type: , href: www.ajpe.org]. The number of “unique visitors” to the Journal web site has continued to increase to over 20,000 per month suggesting that readership by an international audience is increasing.
Eighty-five peer-reviewed manuscripts were published in Volume 69 along with a large number of Viewpoints, Reports, Statements, Book Reviews, and other material (tbl1). One hundred and forty one manuscripts were submitted to the Journal in 2005. Of these, 60% were accepted for publication. Almost 200 individuals served as manuscript and book reviewers in 2005.
Each year the best paper published in the Journal is recognized with the Rufus A. Lyman Award. Rufus A. Lyman was the first Editor of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. Papers are selected based on utility and significance to pharmacy education, originality, research methodology, and writing style. The Lyman Award Committee, which is appointed by the President and chaired by the Editor, selected the top paper. From volume 69, 11 papers were nominated for the Lyman Award and the paper selected was “Pharmacy Schools as Expert Communities of Practice? A Proposal to Radically Restructure Pharmacy Education to Optimize Learning” by Wendy Duncan-Hewitt at Harrison School of Pharmacy, Auburn University, and Zubin Austin at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto.
The Editor is indebted to the Associate Editors Gayle Brazeau and Jack Fincham and Assistant Editor Karen Shipp, Editorial Board Members, the manuscript and book reviewers, and the AACP Board of Directors and staff for their continued efforts and support. The success of the Journal is dependent on the diligent and dedicated efforts of these individuals.
